Mantels and Fireplace Restoration

A fireplace is always a coveted feature of any home, and the mantelpiece surrounding it is crucial to framing the warmth and magic of the fire inside. In this Brookline condominium, the owner asked me to design something with an Art Deco theme. After doing some research at the Boston Architectural Center on Newbury Street in Boston, I came up with this design, with which he was delighted. |

We designed this mantel to fit around a fireplace in Hingham, Mass. The owner already had some inexpensive shelving, which we were able to dress up by adding moldings, and recessed panel wainscoting below. What an improvement! | ||

This
mantel required a lot of head scratching. Since the owners had opted
for a fireplace that was unusual for a Beacon Hill townhouse, we
had to find a mantel shelf that worked but didn't take away from
the overall effect of the fieldstone they picked. Even though it's
kind of eclectic, we think it works pretty nicely. |

My painter had the idea of painting the recesed panels on this custom mantle piece another color that was being used elsewhee in the room. I think it worked very well. |

Leahy Mantel: Several years ago the owner had us build the cabinet to the right of the fireplace which he had originally decided to paint, so we built it in paint grade poplar. but he liked it so much that he stained it himself, and to the uneducated eye, it looks alot like cherry. this year he had us come back to build a custom mantel with a tile surround and granite hearth. it really brings the whole room together. |

Walnut fp surround: In this south end unit, the owners had an existing wood burning firplace that they wanted to dress up. we chose a quarter sawn walnut facade, which looks quite attractive with the honed granite hearth that you see the installers finishing up. |

| Rudolffpand bk: Sometimes you can squeeze a little cabinetry into an area with strange angles. We do this kind of thing all the time. We built a custom mantel to match, and the owner decided to accent the panels with sage green, which we thought was quite attractive. |
